CAT 2024 Question Paper | DILR Slot 2

CAT Previous Year Paper | CAT DILR Questions | Question 11

Explanatory Answer

  • We are given the conditions that numbers in any row appear in an increasing order from left to right. Also, numbers in any column appear in a decreasing order from top to bottom.
  • The number 10 must be placed in Row 1, Column 4, as placing it anywhere else would mean that the number above it or right to it must be greater than 10, which is not possible.
Set 2

  • Number 1 is placed either in the same row or in the same column as 10. It can be in Top left or bottom-right.
  • Neither 2 nor 3 is placed in the same row or in the same column as 10. Row 2 or row 3 without going into the last column.
  • 4 and 6 are placed in the same row. Row 1 or Row 2. If they were in row 3, Row 2 would have to have 2, 3 in the first two columns and that would be impossible.
  • If 4 and 6 were in row 2 then 6 would have to be in the last column as otherwise there would be no room for 2 & 3. If 6 were in the last column, there is no room for 7, 8 and 9. So, 4 & 6 have to be in the first row.
  • Let us consider two possibilities 4 in Column 1, Row 1 or 4 in Row 1, Column 2. What happens to 7, 8, 9?
Set 2

  • Let us consider two possibilities for 6. 6 could be in column 2 or column 3. First row being 4, 5, 6, 10 is not possible. As then 9 would have to be just below 10 and then there is no room for 7 & 8.
Set 2

  • Let us now consider possibilities for 9. 9 has to be next to 10. Either to the left or just below.
Set 2

  • Neither 7 nor 8 is placed in the same row or in the same column as 9.
  • Final two possibilities.
Set 2

The question is " Which of the following statements MUST be true?
I. 10 is placed in a slot in Row 1.
II. 1 is placed in a slot in Row 4.
"

Hence, the answer is 'Both I and II'

Choice A is the correct answer.
