Question 3: A group of women in a society decided to execute interior and exterior decoration of the society in a week's time. Since 11 women dropped out every day from the second day, the entire decoration was completed on 12th day. How many women participated at the beginning ? (Answer to the nearest integer)
We know that had all of the women worked, the work would have been completed in a week. Then if ‘n' women are working at the beginning, the total work will be 7n.
So,
Work done on Day 1 (D1) = n
Work done on Day 2 (D2) = n-11
Work done on Day 3 (D3) = n-22
⋮
Work done on D12 = n – (11*(12-1)) =n-121
Total work done in the 12 days will be the sum of the work done on individual days.
Thus, 7n = D1 + D2 + …. + D12
7n = n + (n-11) + (n-22) + …. + (n-121)
7n = 12n – 726
n = 726/5 = 145.2
= 145 women
The question is "How many women participated at the beginning?"
