Given that there are upwards of 15,000 candidates that appear for the examination every year, there is a need for some perspective on how the whole process works, and how many people proceed to attend the interviews (apart from how to prepare).

Let us get some idea on the numbers, based on the information availed through the RTI Act, and which is available on the official website of IIM Indore (check it out, here).

So, what are the numbers?

There are three parts to this, which then has to be compared with the total number of candidates who appear for IPMAT, to gain an overall picture.

The number of candidates scoring a raw positive score in each of the three sections of the examination

The cut-off requirements for the candidates from different categories

The Aptitude Test Score (ATS)

The number of candidates scoring a raw positive score in each of the three sections of the examination

The data based on IIM Indore IPMAT 2020 shows that (as per the RTI document) only 8,105 candidates scored a net positive score in each of the three sections. This is a significant statistic.

Why is it important?

If we keep the ballpark of the total number of candidates taking the IIM Indore IPMAT as 15,000-18,000, anywhere between 40% and 55% of the candidates are already eliminated from the fray.

The cut-off requirments for the candidates from different categories

Now, the funnel has come down from the total sample space (of 15,000+ candidates) to around 8,000 candidates (who have ended up scoring a net positive score, i.e. greater than 0, in each section). Out of the 8,105 candidates under consideration at this stage, there are 3,075 females and 5,030 males.

IIM Indore IPMAT 2020 Sectional Cutoffs details, along with the number of candidates clearing them based on category

Okay, now what?

Good question. To understand why this table given above (sourced from the RTI document) is of utmost importance, we need to consider the last column of the table that reads “Total Candidates”. Add up the numbers; you will be surprised.

The Aptitude Test Score (ATS)

What do the numbers in the above-mentioned column add up to? Do the Math. The answer is 982.

Which means out of the several thousands that took the IIM Indore IPMAT 2020, only 982 managed to clear the sectional cut-offs for all the three sections. The effective competition to even get a call for the subsequent stages of the selection process is just between these 982 candidates.

IIM Indore IPMAT 2021: What are the takeaways?

This is the most crucial aspect. The reason we are delving into this is because there seems to be some degree of paranoia and hesitation even amongst the most serious IPMAT aspirants. A competitive examination Like IIM Indore IPMAT could be intimidating, but it is important – like we have mentioned all along in this post – to put things in perspective.

The bare minimum marks that are required

Let us say you belong to the General category. The bare minimum marks to clear each section are 20, 26 and 68 for the Quantitative Ability Short Answers, Quantitative Ability Multiple Choice Questions, and Verbal Ability, respectively, as per the information given in the table.

Now, think about this.

In order to satisfy the bare minimum sectional cut-off, you should have scored 114 marks if you are a general candidate. Alternatively, just scoring 114 (mind you, this is the addition of the minimum sectional cut-offs of each section), with enough preparation, and by choosing the right questions in the examination, will push you forward from competing with a sample space of 15,000+ candidates to competing with 982 candidates.

In a nutshell…

You have every reason to prepare, given the competition reduces by a huge magnitude just by clearing sectional cut-offs. Of course, the overall minimum score required to be considered for a call is going to be uncertain and dependent on each year’s scores.

Sign up here, and start preparing today!

Stay safe and best wishes for IPMAT 2021!

Written by Giridharan Raghuraman

IIM Indore IPMAT 2021 – the first stumbling block for several candidates vying to pursue the Integrated Programme in Management (IPM).
