CAT Questions

CAT 2025 DILR was similar to CAT 2022 in pattern. All the four sets had 5 questions this year too. There were 6 TITA Questions. Atleast two sets were doable in each slot and one of the four sets was extremely tough. Choice of Sets became a crucial factor. Overall this section was at a medium to high level of difficulty.

A round table has seven chairs around it. The chairs are numbered 1 through 7 in a clockwise direction. Four friends, Aslam, Bashir, Chhavi, and Davies, sit on four of the chairs. In the starting position, Aslam and Chhavi are sitting next to each other, while for Bashir as well as Davies, there are empty chairs on either side of the chairs that are sitting on.

The friends take turns moving either clockwise or counterclockwise from their chair. The friend who has to move in a turn occupies the first empty chair in whichever direction (s)he chooses to move. Aslam moves first (Turn 1), followed by Bashir, Chhavi, and Davies (Turns 2, 3, and 4, respectively). Then Aslam moves again followed by Bashir, and Chhavi (Turns 5, 6, and 7, respectively).

The following information is known.

1. The four friends occupy adjacent chairs only at the end of Turn 2 and Turn 6.
2. Davies occupies Chair 2 after Turn 1 and Chair 4 after Turn 5, and Chhavi occupies Chair 7 after Turn 2.

Explanatory Answer

We know that Davies and Chavi don't change their seats at least until Turn 3. "Davies occupies Chair 2 after Turn 1, and Chhavi occupies Chair 7 after Turn 2" - implies that to start with Davies was in chair 2 and Chavi was in chair 7.
Since Chavi sits next to Aslam and Davies and Basher don't have any neighbours initially, the seating arrangement looks like so at the beginning of Turn 1.


Aslam and Basher move around in Turn 1 and Turn 2 respectively. By the end of Turn 2, since all of them should sit in adjacent chairs, this will only be possible if Aslam moves to chair 1 in Turn 1 and Basher moves to chair 3 in Turn 2.
The seating arrangement at the end of Turn 1 & 2 will be like so...



Chavi has to move in Turn 3, if she moves in the clockwise direction and takes the first empty seat, she'll be at seat 4. All four of them will still be seated adjacent to each other.
Hence, Chavi has to move anti-clockwise and take chair 6.


Davies has to move in Turn 4. By the end of turn 5, he must be in seat 4. Hence, this is his only oppurtunity and so has to take chair 4.


Aslam and Basher move around in Turn 5 and Turn 6 respectively. By the end of Turn 6, since all of them should sit in adjacent chairs, this will only be possible if Aslam moves to chair 7 in Turn 5 and Basher moves to chair 5 in Turn 6.
The seating arrangement at the end of Turn 5 & 6 will be like so...



Chavi has to move in turn 7, she is free to move clockwise and sit at chair 1 or move anti-clockwise and sit at chair 7.
