Question 18: Consider this equation: |x-5|2 + 5|x-5| - 24 = 0 . The some of all the roots of the above equation is:
Lets say |x – 5| = y,
Then the equation can be rewritten as y2 + 5y - 24 = 0
(y+8)(y-3)=0
Which means y can be -8 or 3
So, |x – 5| = -8 or 3
We know that modulus function can only have positive values out of it and so -8 cannot be the its value.
Then |x – 5| = 3
x – 5 = -3 or x – 5 = 3
x = 2 or 8
Therefore, the sum is 10
The question is "Sum of the roots of the equation is:"
