Question 3 : Fill in the blank with the correct word:
The adjective for metal is metallic. But not for iron, which is ________
Tricky question. The adjective for iron is ferrous. So, choice B looks to be the right one at the outset. But a close look at the sentences reveals that choice A (ironic) is a better fit. The adjective for metal is metallic. But it is not the case for iron, which is unexpected/ ironic (note the pun on the word here). What does the pronoun 'which' in the second sentence refer to? The fact that the adjective for iron is not derived the same way as it is for metal. This fact is ironic. Note that 'which' in the second sentence does not refer to iron as such. So, ferrous is not the right answer.
The question is " Fill in the blank with the correct word:
The adjective for metal is metallic. But not for iron, which is ________ "
Choice A is the correct answer.
