Question 22 : Read the following paragraph and answer the question that follows:
The size of oceanic waves is a function of the velocity of the wind and of fetch, the length of the surface of the water subject to those winds. The average impact of waves against a coastline is a function of the size of the waves and the shape of the sea bottom. The degree of erosion on coastline is a function of the average impact of waves and the geologic composition of the coastline.
According to the above paragraph, which of the following options will be true?
1) The fetch of wind is related to the shape of the sea bottom. – The paragraph describes size of waves as dependent on fetch. It does not mention anything about fetch relating to shape of sea bottom. This option can thus be eliminated.
2) The size of oceanic waves will not fluctuate far from average. – We are only told the size of oceanic waves depends on velocity of wind and fetch. How much is the degree of fluctuation is not explicitly told, and is a factor of the velocity and fetch. There is no grounds to prove the size will not fluctuate far from average from the passage. Hence, this can be eliminated.
3) The size of oceanic wave is correlated with the shape of the sea bottom. – Size of the wave is correlated only to velocity and fetch. Hence, this option can be eliminated.
4) Degree of erosion on coastline is not related with the velocity of wind. – Degree of erosion is dependent on average impact of waves; this, in turn, is dependent on size of the waves, which eventually depends upon the velocity of wind. Hence, it is wrong to say that there is no relation between degree of erosion and velocity of wind. This option can thus be eliminated.
5) Degree of erosion on coastline is related to shape of the sea-bottom. – This is the right answer choice. Degree of erosion is related to average impact of waves; average impact of waves is related the shape of sea-bottom. Hence, there is some degree of correlation that can be established
Choice E is the correct answer.
