CLAT Quantitative Techniques

CLAT Quantitative Techniques section tests candidates on two tenets – Data Interpretation ability, and Mathematical & Computational skills. Data Interpretation requires comprehending data from Line Graphs, Bar Graphs, Pie Charts and the like. Computational skills can be honed with a basic understanding of mathematical concepts like Percentages, Averages, and Ratios and Proportions.

The following questions on CLAT Quantitative Techniques have been curated meticulously, taking into account the latest samples released by the Consortium of NLUs. These questions are pegged exactly at the level of difficulty of CLAT.

CLAT Quantitative Techniques: Three Friends

Three friends Gowri, Madan and Abhishek who run YouTube channels organized a party. On the day of the party, Abhishek and Madan had a total of 350 subscribers across their channels. Madan and Gowri had a total of 400 subscribers across their channels.

The number of subscribers in each of their channels increases by a fixed amount each day and no one unsubscribes (i.e., leaves) their channels.

The trio had met 50 days before the party to celebrate the occasion of Gowri’s channel reaching 100 subscribers. It is known that Gowri’s channel gains 1 subscriber per day. Madan’s channel gains 4 times as many subscribers as Gowri’s channel per day. At the time of this meeting 50 days ago, total subscriber count across all three channels was 150.

How many subscribers does Abhishek gain per day?

  1. 2
  2. 3
  3. 1
  4. 4

Explanatory Answer

Let the number of subscribers Abhishek has on the day of the party be x, no. of subscribers Madan has on the day of the party be y and the number of subscribers Gowri has on the day of the party be z

Abhishek and Madan have a total of 350 subscribers: x+y = 350

Madan and Gowri have a total of 400 subscribers: y+z = 400

50 days ago, Gowri’s channel had 100 subscribers. Gowri’s channel gains 1 subscriber per day. So, on the day of the party Gowri’s channel has 150 subscribers. i.e., z = 150
y + 150 = 400
y = 250
x = 350 – 250 = 100

50 days ago, the number of subscribers for Madan’s channel would’ve been: 250 – (50*4) = 50. It is given that the total number of subscribers 50 days ago was 150.

It is also given that Gowri had 100 subscribers 50 days ago. Madan’s subscribers + Gowri’s subscribers = 50 + 100 = 150. Therefore, Abhishek would’ve had 0 subscribers 50 days ago.

number of subscribers Abhishek has on the day of the party = x = 100

In 50 days, he gained 100 subscribers. So, he gained 2 subscribers per day.

Answer: A) 2 (Abhishek gained 2 subscribers per day)
