Explanatory Answer

Quantifiable entities are mentioned with “fewer” while non-quantified ones are usually mentioned with “less”. In the passage, 10,000 men (quantified) -> fewer than; gold (non-quantified) -> less
The first two blanks, thus, are sorted. We are left with options 1 and 3 only now with that.
Some time -> something that denotes a brief period
Sometime -> something that denotes an action in the past or future with a degree of uncertainty.
The writer has not written for a brief period, and he would get to write it probably soon. Hence, Blank 3 is “some time” and Blank 4 is “sometime”. We can seal option 1 as the right answer choice conveniently.
