Question 6 : A class consists of 30 students. Each of them has registered for 5 courses. Each course instructor conducts an exam out of 200 marks. The average percentage marks of all 30 students across all courses they have registered for, is 80%. Two of them apply for revaluation in a course. If none of their marks reduce, and the average of all 30 students across all courses becomes 80.02%, the maximum possible increase in marks for either of the 2 students is
In the class there are 30 students, the total marks for all the students across different courses is
30 * 5 * 200 (30 students, 5 courses and 200 marks per course per student)
= 30 * 1000
The change in the percentage of marks scored is (80.02 - 80.00) %
= 0.02%
So the change in the marks is 3 * 1000 * 0.02%
= 30 * 1000 * \(\frac{\frac{2}{100}}{100}\)
= 3 * 2
= 6 marks
These 6 marks came from revaluation in a course, and no student got any deductions in marks. Thus it can be inferred that either both the students got some increase in their marks or that one got an increase and the other person’s marks remained the same.
For the maximum increase in a student’s marks the marks should only increase for one student. So one student gets all the 6 marks and the other student gets no increase.
