IPMAT Indore 2021 Analysis

The IPM Aptitude Test for IIM Indore wrapped up on 16th July 2021. The total duration of the exam was 90 minutes, starting at 9:30 am till 11:00 am. As gauged by the students of 2IIM who took the exam, the difficulty level of IPMAT 2021 was higher than 2020, but easier when compared to the IPMAT 2019 exam. The pattern of the exam was similar to IPMAT 2020.

There were three sections in the exams, Quantitative Ability (SA), Quantitative Ability (MCQ) and Verbal Ability (MCQ). The duration of each of these sections was 30 minutes. Each correct attempt in the Quantitative Ability (MCQ) and Verbal Ability (MCQ) sections would fetch you +4 marks and an incorrect answer would attract a penalty of 1 mark. There was no negative marking for the Quantitative Ability (Short Answers). The order of the sections was pre-specified with a time limit of 30 minutes. The order of sections remained the same throughout, irrespective of the candidates. The IPMAT Indore exam also has a separate cut-off for each section tested. Hence, it is important to make sure that the students attempt all sections equally well while maintaining a good overall score.

For IIM Indore the batch intake every year for domestic students is 150 students. The composite score for admissions to IIM Indore would be calculated giving 65% weightage to the IPMAT 2021 exam and 35% weightage to the Personal Assessment including form submission and interviews. Based on the Admission Procedure document released by IIM Indore, the composite score will encompass 50% of the marks scored in the Verbal Ability section and 25% each of Quantitative Ability MCQs and Short Answer sections.

The Admission Procedure document released by IIM Indore can be accessed here.

Let’s take up each section one after the other and break it down for easier understanding!

Quantitative Ability (Short Answers-SA)

This section had a total of 10 questions which were supposed to be completed in the allotted 30 minutes. The questions were easy and doable. The section comprised of questions from topics like pipes and cisterns, mensuration, lines and coordinate geometry. There was no negative marking in this section and a correct answer would fetch you 4 marks.

This is the section that evidently distinguishes IPM Indore and IPM Rohtak exams. There are no TITA-type questions in IPMAT Rohtak and it also includes the Logical Reasoning section. To know more about IPMAT Rohtak 2021 exam analysis, click here.

Quantitative Ability (Multiple Choice Questions-MCQ)

This section was a mix of 20 questions from covering all the major topics in quants. The time duration to complete these questions was 30 minutes. The difficulty level of questions in this section was varied, with few easy and straightforward questions, some tricky and some easy but time-consuming questions. This section also had a Data Interpretation question which was a little long. Overall this section ranged from average to difficult in terms of the level of the section.

The topic-wise distribution of the questions from this section is as shown in the table below. The Data Interpretation encompassed 5 questions and the rest of the questions were spread across various topics of quants.

Topic Number of Questions
Data Interpretation 5
Arithmetic Progressions 2
Logarithms 1
Permutation & Combination 1
Geometry 2
Functions 1
Averages 1

Verbal Ability (Multiple Choice Questions-MCQ)

This section comprised of 30 questions to be completed in 30 minutes time with 1 reading comprehension passage with 6 questions. The passage was comprehendible, however the options in a few questions were similar. The others questions were spread across 4 types:

1. Fill in the blanks with appropriate words/Correct the incorrect word.
2. Sentence correction.
3. Finding the missing sentence in a paragraph.
4. Sentence rearrangement.

One important thing to note in this section is that the Sentence Rearrangement questions were TITA type and yet carried negative marks. This is very unusual considering the previous IPM Papers for IIM Indore. Students who did not notice this negative mark component in these TITA questions and went on to answer the questions without being sure of the answer might face a slight disadvantage. Further division of the questions in this section is as shown in the table below.

Overall, the exam was based on the 2020 exam pattern, but a notch higher in the difficulty level.

Topic Number of Questions
Reading Comprehension (1 Passage) 6
Sentence Rearrangement (TITA) 3
Fill in the Blanks 5
Sentence Correction 4
Sentence Completion 5
Idioms and Phrases 3
Word Usage 4

Overall, the exam was based on the 2020 exam pattern, but a notch higher in the difficulty level.
