The eligibility – The candidates should have passed their 10th grade in 2017 or later, and their 12th grade in 2019 or later. Those candidates who are about to appear for their 12th grade Board examinations in 2021 (in the next few months) are also eligible to apply.
The minimum eligibility requirements – The candidates must have scored 60% in their 10th grade and 12th grade Board examinations. A 5% relaxation is given for the candidates belonging to the SC/ST/PwD category.
Timeline – The application for JIPMAT will be open from 1st April to 30th April, 2021. The examination will be conducted on 20th June, 2021.
Now that we have had a glimpse of the existing information, let us delve deep into what has been published now in the official information bulletin by the NTA.
JIPMAT and the official bulletin
In addition to the existing details, the following information is known.
The correction window
After the submission of application, the candidates would be given an option to make corrections and modifications of certain details between 5th May and 10th May, 2021.
The JIPMAT examination pattern
The exam will consist of three sections – Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension.
Section | Number of questions | Marks per question | Total marks |
Quantitative Aptitude (QA) | 33 | 4 | 132 |
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) | 33 | 4 | 132 |
Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) | 34 | 4 | 136 |
Total | 100 | 4 | 400 |
The marking scheme
All the questions will be of the MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) type, and there is a penalty of one mark for every wrong answer. So, a correct answer fetches +4, while a wrong answer fetches -1.
The timing of the examination
JIPMAT will be held on 20th June, 2021, between 3 pm and 5.30 pm, for a duration of 150 minutes. The candidates who opt for a scribe will be given a relaxation of 60 minutes. There seems to be NO sectional time limit in JIPMAT.
The exam fee
The candidates would have to pay a fee of Rs. 2,000 for registration if they belong to the General category, and Rs. 1,000 if they belong to the SC/ST/PwD/Transgender categories.
The FAQ section of the JIPMAT information bulletin
Though there are multiple questions that are answered in the FAQ section of the information bulletin, the one thing that catches the attention is the following question:
“Is there any age restriction for applying for the exam?”
The answer to this question, as per the official FAQ section, is NO.
What is the issue there?
The usual threshold for taking up the IPMAT examination in general is 20 years. So, this information that there is no age limit brings with it some questions and doubts, especially given the specifications on the passing year pertaining to the 10th grade and 12th grade.
That apart, the notification is clear.
How should the aspirants prepare for JIPMAT?
The paper resembles the examination pattern of CAT, to a large extent. The number of questions, the split across sections are all similar. The only issue is the variation in the overall time.
Since the total time of the examination is 150 minutes, and there is no sectional timing, it would be prudent to spend 40-45 minutes on each section and keep the last 15-30 minutes for revisiting the questions, unmarking the ones that are doubtful, and try out certain uqestions which you have reserved for the last minute.
