Question 36 : A boatman goes 2 km against the current of the stream in 1 hour and goes 1 km along the current in 10 minutes. How long will it take to go 5 km in stationary water?
Let the speed of the boat in still water be ‘b’.
And the speed of the stream be ‘s’.
It is given that the boatman goes 2 km against the current of the stream in 1 hour.
Which means the upstream speed = 2/1 = 2kmph.
Upstream speed = b – s = 2 kmph.
Also it is given that he goes 1 km along the current in 10 minutes.
Which means the downstream speed = 1/(10/60) = 6 kmph.
Downstream speed = b + s = 6kmph.
b – s = 2kmph
b + s = 6 kmph
b – s + b + s = 2 + 6 = 8kmph
2b = 8 kmph
b = 4kmph.
The speed of the boat in still water = 4 kmph.
Time taken to travel 5 km = 5/4 hours = 1 ¼ hours. (Speed = Distance / Time taken)
= 1 hour 15 minutes
Therefore, time taken by the boat to travel 5km in still water = 1 hour 15 minutes.
The question is "A boatman goes 2 km against the current of the stream in 1 hour and goes 1 km along the current in 10 minutes. How long will it take to go 5 km in stationary water?"
Choice C is the correct answer
