Directions: Study the data given below and answer the following questions. The pie charts shown below shows the distance covered by a boat moving upstream and downstream indifferent days of a week. And the table shows the speed of stream in km/hr. in different days of a week.
Question 3 : If the speed of boat in still water on Saturday was 27 km/hr and the speed of boat in still water on Wednesday was 66\\frac{2}{3}\\)% more than that of Saturday and time taken to travel upstream on Wednesday is \\frac{16}{13}\\) times than time taken by it to travel downstream on Saturday, then find the speed of stream (in kmph) on Saturday?
Let speed of the boat Upstream be U.
Speed of the boat Downstream be D.
Speed of boat in still water be B.
Speed of the stream be W.
U = B – W
D = B + W
We are given that speed of boat in still water on Saturday was 27 kmph.
Bsat= 27kmph
Also, the speed of boat in still water on Wednesday was 66 \\frac{2}{3}\\) % more than that of Saturday
Bwed = Bsat + 66 \\frac{2}{3}\\) % * Bsat = 27 + 200/3 * 27/100 = 45kmph
Let time taken to travel downstream on Saturday be ‘t’
Time taken to travel upstream on Wednesday = \\frac{16}{13}\\) t.
Wednesday, Speed of the stream = 6 kmph.
Wwed = 6kmph
Upstream speed on Wednesday = Uwed = Bwed – Wwed = 45 – 6 = 39kmph
Distance travelled upstream on Wednesday = 12% of 4800 = 576km.
So, time taken to cover Upstream on Wednesday = \\frac{576}{39}\\) = 14 \\frac{10}{13}\\) = \\frac{192}{13}\\) hours.
Time taken to travel upstream on Wednesday = \\frac{16}{13}\\) t = \\frac{192}{13}\\) hours.
t=12 hours.
Time taken to travel downstream on Saturday =t =12hours.
Distance covered Downstream on Saturday = 18% of 2400 = 432km
Downstream speed on Saturday Dsat = \\frac{432}{12}\\) = 36kmph
Dsat = Bsat + Wsat
36 = 27 + Wsat, Wsat = 9 kmph.
Therefore speed of Stream on Saturday is 9 kmph.
The question is "If the speed of boat in still water on Saturday was 27 km/hr and the speed of boat in still water on Wednesday was 66\\frac{2}{3}\\)% more than that of Saturday and time taken to travel upstream on Wednesday is \\frac{16}{13}\\) times than time taken by it to travel downstream on Saturday, then find the speed of stream (in kmph) on Saturday?"
