Directions: Study the data given below and answer the following questions. The pie charts shown below shows the distance covered by a boat moving upstream and downstream indifferent days of a week. And the table shows the speed of stream in km/hr. in different days of a week.
Question 4 : The speed of boat in still water on Saturday was 21 km/hr. and that on Sunday was 28\\frac{4}{7}\\)% more than that on Saturday, if the time taken by boat to travel upstream on Saturday is 2\\frac{1}{2}\\) times the time taken to travel downstream on Sunday, then find the time taken by the boat to cover a distance of 125 km upstream on Saturday?
Let speed of the boat Upstream be U.
Speed of the boat Downstream be D.
Speed of boat in still water be B.
Speed of the stream be W.
U = B – W
D = B + W
Bsat = 21kmph.
Bsun = 21 + 28\\frac{4}{7}\\)% of 21 = 21 + \\frac{200}{700}\\) ×21= 21 + 6 = 27kmph.
Wsun = 3kmph
Dsun = Bsun + Wsun = 27 + 3 = 30kmph
Time taken to travel downstream on Sunday = \\frac{Downstream distance travelled on Sunday}{D_{sun}}\\) = \\frac{12% 0f 2400}{30}\\) = \\frac{12 * 24}{30}\\) = 9.6 hrs
Time taken to travel upstream on Saturday = 2 \\frac{1}{2}\\) times the Time taken to travel downstream on Sunday = \\frac{5}{2}\\) * 9.6 = 24 hrs.
Time taken to travel upstream on Saturday = 24 hrs.
Distance covered upstream on Saturday = 10% of 4800 = 480
Time taken to cover 125 km upstream on Saturday = ?
24hrs ----> 480 km
? ----> 125 km
= \\frac{24*125}{480}\\) = 6.25 hrs
So, time taken by the boat to cover a distance of 125 km upstream on Saturday = 6 hours 15 minutes.
