Here are five tips that’ll help you leverage your JEE Preparation to ace the IPMAT exams:
1. Orient your preparation towards Verbal Ability
The IPMAT exam encompasses 60% Quants and 40% Verbal Ability. If you are putting substantial efforts in your JEE preparation, you will be good to bag 60% of the IPMAT questions. The problem arises when we move on to the Verbal Ability section of the exam. To ace the exam, you will need to focus more on the verbal ability section and hence, it only makes sense to orient your preparation towards Verbal Ability, atleast till the time we reach the final few months before the exam.
2. Build a Reading Habit
Reading regularly is the first step towards preparing for Verbal Ability. Read on a daily basis. Explore newspapers/articles/novels across different domains. Get comfortable with reading. Your aim should be to understand what you are reading. Read and re-read till you absorb and comprehend what the author is trying to say. You can start with something that is very simple and easy or something that interests you. Over time you can diversify what you read. Go through Bharath’s Curated Reading List to find brilliant articles across all domains, especially curated for the Verbal Ability preparation.
See the below video to debunk the myths associated with reading.
3. Practice different question types
The Verbal Ability section in the IPMAT exams extends beyond just reading comprehensions and spans across questions which include sentence rearrangement, sentence completion, synonyms, idioms, etc. that require practice. Therefore, it will prove to be very beneficial if you start practicing questions of these types. Go through 2IIM’s question bank to find plethora of questions to practice. You can also find previous year IPMAT question papers with detailed solutions here.
4. Switch Quants preparation to simpler topics
JEE preparation well equips you to deal with tougher topics in mathematics like Trigonometry, Functions, Logarithms, etc. However, IPMAT exams focus more on simpler topics like Percentages, Time, Speed and Distance, Profit and Loss, etc. Here you will need to switch gears and move to practicing simpler topics so that you get a hang of solving these questions quickly and gradually work on further amping up your speed. This is the part of your preparation strategy that can also be worked upon in the final leg of your preparation. The initial focus should still be on the Verbal Ability section.
5. Pick and choose your battles
For acing the IPMAT exam, you will need to re-orient yourself towards the IPMAT exam. What works for you during your JEE preparation/mocks might not necessarily give you the desired results during the IPMAT exams. IPMAT mocks will help you get used to the pattern of the exam. You will need to pick and choose easier questions in the mixed bag during IPMAT and not get hooked up to a difficult question that interests you. Remember, all questions carry equal marks, and it is better to go in and solve a question that you are 100% sure about rather than wasting time on a question that you think is interesting and you will be able to solve.
