Some beautiful questions that laid emphasis on Learning ideas from basics and being able to comprehend more than remembering gazillion formulae and shortcuts.
Question 14: Consider a cuboidal underground tunnel of length 500 m whose cross-section is given in the figure. If 1 cubic meter of concrete costs 1000 rupees, find the amount of money needed to build the Tunnel.
We see that the semi-circular part is hollow out of the rectangle, and the concrete will fill the remaining portion along the length of the tunnel
So, the volume shaded region is (area of rectangle – area of semicircle) x length of the tunnel
(16 x 8 - \\frac{π 8^2}{2}) ) x 500 m2
= (128 – 32π) x 500
We also know that 1cu meter of concrete costs Rs 1000,
So, the cost of the tunnel will be:
(128 – 32π) x 500 x 1000
= (64 – 16π) x 1000 x1000
=16 (4 - π) x 106
Hence, the answer is 16 (4 - π) x 106
The question is "The amount of money needed to build the Tunnel"
