Question 14 : Read the Following statements and answer the question that follows:

1. But its most advanced formulation is called superstring theory, which even predicts the precise number of dimensions: ten.
2. However, the theory has already swept across the major physics research laboratories of the world and has irrevocably altered the scientific landscape of modern physics, generating a staggering number of research papers in the scientific literature (over 5,000 by one count).
3. Scientifically, the hyperspace theory goes by the names of Kaluza-Klein theory and supergravity.
4. The usual three dimensions of space (length, width, and breadth) and one of time are now extended by six more spatial dimensions.
5. We caution that the theory of hyperspace has not yet been experimentally confirmed and would, in fact, be exceedingly difficult to prove in the laboratory.

Rank the above five statements so as to make it a logical sequence:

  1. 3, 1, 4, 5, 2
  2. 3, 4, 1, 5, 2

Explanatory Answer

Statement 1 starts with ‘But’ and mention ‘its’, which means there is an earlier mention of something that is substituted as a pronoun. So it cannot be the opening statement.
Statement 2 starts with ‘However, the theory has already swept’ meaning there is some theory that is talked about earlier. Hence, this cannot be the opening statement.
Statement 3 and 5 are the ones that mention names of theories. Between them, statement 3 seems to be the perfect opening statement.
That leaves us with options A, B and D.
Statement 4 talks about “six more dimensions” and it mentions “now”. This implies there should be some statement that connects 3 and 4. That bridge is Statement 1, which talks about the ten dimensions.
The sequence so far is 3 1 4.
Between Statements 2 and 5, Statement 2 starts with “However, the theory has already swept away”. This implies there is something contrary in context. Statement 5 fills the void. So, 5 should be followed by 2.
Hence, the right sequence is 3 1 4 5 2.

Choice A is the correct answer.
