Hi, the ending is intentionally left open-ended, but the most obvious conclusion we can derive is that he knew the importance of his life, and realized that more than anything, his own life mattered to him the most. However, ironically, that comes towards the end of the life. In all likelihood, we can assume that the bullet hit him.
The other parallels we can draw are that in the story he tells the children, the male has killed the female, and here the female kills the male. If you believe in supernatural elements, this can also be taken to be the female ghost avenging the sin committed to her.
Whatever floats our boat! Open-ended fictional pieces are usually more interesting due to this.
