Let’s jump onto the admission process now.
IIM Visakhapatnam PGP 2021-23 – Admission Process
The admission process takes place in 3 phases, with each phase having their own unique selection criteria, parameters and weights.
Phase 1:
First off, a candidate needs to have taken CAT 2020 and selected IIM Visakhapatnam’s PGP 2021-23 at the time of the CAT Application itself. Furthermore, the candidates who satisfy the following selection criteria are sent emails by IIM Visakhapatnam which contain a link to apply for their PGP 2021-23 program (for the dates, refer to the ‘important dates’ section). The fees for the application is Rs. 1000.
For the first shortlist, candidates are sorted on the basis of their sectional percentiles and overall CAT 2020 scores alone. There are significant considerations provided to the EWS, NC-OBC, PwD, SC/ST categories. Do remember to read the sectional percentiles and overall scores if you belong to any of these categories!
As mentioned earlier, an email will be sent to the eligible candidates with a link to the IIM Visakhapatnam PGP 2021-23 application portal. Should you wish to apply, you must attach your:
- Statement of Purpose,
- Semester/year-wise UG Scores,
- Copies of your academic transcripts and certificates (10th and 12th),
- Work experience proofs (if applicable) and finally,
- A certificate attesting that you belong to the NC-OBC, SC/ST, EWS or PwD if it is applicable to you.
A caveat: Only those candidates who have been shortlisted and applied online with the aforementioned documents will be considered for Phase 2: Personal Interview
Phase 2:
Around the first week of April 2021 (refer to the ‘Important Dates’ section at the top), qualified candidates will be sent another email soliciting their reconfirmation for the application to the IIM Visakhapatnam PGP 2021-23 program.
After reconfirmation, the phase 2 shortlisting will begin. The 10th and 12th scores of the candidate are standardised with the 90th percentile scores obtained in that board using the 10th and 12th scores of the CAT Applicants for the past 2 years.
Standardization occurs for your Bachelor’s Degree/ Professional Degree Scores as well. Acceptable Professional Degrees are CA, CS and Cost Accounting.
The score/weight for work experience (if applicable) is = 8x/36 (if 0 < x <36) ; 8 (if x > 36), where x is the number of the months of work experience upto July 2020, as captured in the CAT 2020 application form.
Simply put, the highest scores go to those with 3 (or more) years of work experience.
Here are the parameters for the Phase 2 Shortlisting, along with their weightage:
PARAMETERS | WEIGHTAGES |
CAT 2020 Score | 40 |
10th Board Scores | 10 |
12th Board Scores | 10 |
Bachelor’s Degree Scores | 18 |
Diversity: Gender (Female & Transgender) / Non-Engineer | 10 |
Work Experience | 12 |
Notes:
The 40 points given to the CAT Score are broken down in the following way: Quant Section (10 points), DILR Section (16 points) and VARC Section (14 points). This means that the phase 1 selection criteria is merely the least you can get within the CAT Score weightage, The better your sectional percentiles and overall score, the higher your CAT Score Weightage becomes.
These parameters are used to obtain a preliminary shortlist, beyond which further shortlisting takes place for the Personal Interviews. Normalisation takes place as per the following formula:
All standardization is done with reference to the qualifying first shortlist. Standardized score (truncated between 0 and weight (wt)) is computed from the raw score (val) as:
Max [0, min {wt, wt/2 + ((val-mean)/sd) * wt/6}]
Glean from it what you will 😛
Phase 3
The final phase of the IIM Visakhapatnam PGP 2021-23 involves the following parameters:
PARAMETERS | WEIGHTAGES |
Personal Interview Score | 25 |
CAT 2020 Score | 25 |
10th Board Scores | 5 |
12th Board Scores | 5 |
Bachelor’s Degree Scores | 10 |
Diversity: Gender (Female & Transgender) / Non-Engineer | 20 |
Work Experience | 10 |
It suffices to say that IIM Visakhapatnam places immense weightage on past academics (link to the official brief will be provided below). You must also note that these criteria may be changed anytime before the declaration of the results.
Note:
Candidates who have been shortlisted and interviewed by one or more of the IIM’s such as IIM B, L, C, K, and I for the PGP/PGPM Programmes will not be required to appear for the PI of IIM Visakhapatnam. Instead, the average of the PI Scores from their interviews will be taken to derive their PI Score for IIM V.
Those who have not been shortlisted and interviewed by one or more of the IIM’s mentioned above will be required to appear for the personal interview to be conducted by IIM V.
